OUR HISTORY

It is an inimitable pleasure when dreams come true.

That has been our experience and journey in creating “Swindon House”. Combining our different backgrounds of actuarial science and medical sciences from Edinburgh, Jamaica and Barbados we embarked on our first private clinic in 2004.

Our initial clientele maladies were primarily related to internal diseases and their complications. However, there was a keen interest in diabetes and its impact on our community from both the medical perspective as well as the inability of those living with diabetes to obtain medical insurance. Barbados’ reputation of being the “amputation capital of the world” was distressing and even more worrying as we pondered whether this may someday be our fate.

We had to do something radical, and we decided that we would develop our clinic to focus on diabetes and wellness. In 2006 we moved to Delaware Medical Centre and hired our first group of employees. Steady growth and expansion of services led to the opening of our second office located in the northern parish of St Peter, at Hoppin Medical Clinic in 2008. By 2015 our city branch relocated to Belleville, St Michael but knew we would need a larger space to provide the services desperately needed by our communities.

“Swindon House” is named in memory of Anne and Francis Young, two hoteliers who made Barbados their home in the 1970s. Francis worked as a chef at the Sandy Lane Hotel. Anne assisted with the 17th Barbados Brownie Pack which met at Leacock’s Private School (St Peter) and was Maxine’s “Tawny Owl”. When they returned to England, they moved to Swindon and converted an old church chapel into an enchanting countryside hotel known as “The Peartree at Purton”. We spent many happy times at The Peartree with the Young family during our various periods of study and vacationing in England.
