Nutrition is about having a balanced diet and eating healthy. Giving your body the right nutrients is essential to being healthy, however, since we are all different, here at ECI we will guide you in what is right in getting you and your body back on track.
There are different kind of nutrients in food and they are generally classified into 7 major groups.These are :
Our forefathers lived longer lives compared to us today, and the main reasons for this was that they did manual labour along with lived by using 5 classes of food, starch carbohydrates, fruits and vegetable, protein, dairy and healthy fats. You see, a healthy diet during our life promotes normal growth, maintains a healthy body weight and helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases leading to an overall healthy well-being. So here are our 5 tips in making sure you’re on the right track.
1. Always try and eat whole foods. Best way of doing this is to choose foods in their natural form and avoiding processed goods.
2. Eat things that will help with your digestive system. Things like Whole grain foods, Fruits, vegetables with skin, leafy green vegetables, unsaturated fats and ginger. ‘A Healthy Gut is a Happy Gut.’
3. We were told as children growing up, that soft drinks (Sodas) are bad for you, the amount of added sugar in these products can be very detrimental to our health, so avoid sugary drinks and juices
4. When having a meal, always have a rainbow of colours on you plate. Ensure you have a small portion of starch, medium portion of protein and a large portion of colourful vegetables.
5. Most importantly “Less is More”. There is no need to pile your plate high with food when you can eat the rainbow as stated in #4.
Don’t have to eat the same thing day in day out. You can eat a variety of meals depending on your pocket, yes eating healthy can be expensive, but if you buy seasonal produce and stock up on items when you see great deals you will find it’s not that bad.
Fruits : Bananas, Mangoes, Golden Apples, Guavas, Pawpaw
Starches : Sweet Potatoes, Yams, Cassava, Eddoes, Breadfruit
Vegetables : Pumpkins, Cabbage, Carrots, Okras, Cucumbers, Lettuce, Tomatoes
